Aloe thompsoniae is a small dwarf aloe and can grow up to 0.2m. It is usually stemless or has a short stem with the leaves arranged in a dense, small rosette about 200mm in diameter. The leaves are about 50-200x5-15mm, green in colour and softly mottled towards the base, the margins have very small teeth. The inflorescence is an ascending raceme of about 200x300mm long bearing approximately 3-5 pale light pink bracts. Aloe thompsoniae's flowers are grouped together about 12-16 in a cluster at the end of the head. They are drooping, orange-reddish in colour with green tips about 25-30mm long. The flowers are borne between December and January.
