Plant Description

Boophane disticha is a  very hardy, deciduous plant with a huge bulb above ground. The fan-shaped leaves are very distinctive and is easily spotted in the veld. The large red flower head appears in early spring before the leaves. Once the flowers have been pollinated each flower stalk elongates and carries the seed on the end to form a tumbleweed. Extensively used in traditional medicine but with caution as it is poisonous.

Boophane disticha does not transplant well and is very slow from seed. Mature bulbs can as old as 100 years. Treat it with respect.
