Plant Description

Gomphocarpus physocarpus is an upright, soft shrub that reaches heights between 0.5-2m tall. It has a fibrous rootstock and pale yellowish green, hollow branches. The leaves are light green and cream to white flowers are borne in clusters almost throughout the year but mainly during summer (November to April). The petals are white and the corona is suffused with pink or purple. It has striking yellowish, ball-like fruits and is an excellent butterfly plant..

Gomphocarpus physocarpus is an interesting addition to any garden as focal point, where its unique fruits add interest and texture. It attracts butterflies to the garden but the entire plant is poisonous with a milky latex and should not be in reach of any animals or children.

Gomphocarpus physocarpus can be considered as a biennial but will seed itself and does not become weedy.
