Kniphofia uvaria is a robust bulbous perennial that can reach heights between 1-2m. It is an erect perennial often found in groups or large colonies in the grassland. The leaves are generally arranged in a dense rosette and the leaves are about 1500x50mm large, they are blueish-grey-green in colour, hard, fibrous and narrower than some species. It flowers in summer between December and May with very dense, bi-coloured inflorescence of about 160x65mm, the buds are pinkish red and about 25-35mm in size with yellow stamens protruding, the flowers are roundish and flowers attract pollinating insects and birds to the garden.
Kniphofia uvaria is a hardy garden plant ideal for a mixed border and is a lovely feature in a rockery or less formal grassland type garden. The lovely flower display will ensure a lovely colourful display throughout the season and it is ideal for mass planting. Due to its size, it needs to be trimmed from time to time.
