Lactuca inermis is a perennial, low-growing, sparsely-branched herb with a long thick semi-woody taproot. Leaves are crowded on the lower stem. The leaves and stems contain a milky latex. The flower heads consist of  florets  and are white to pale blue or mauve, rarely yellow.

Lactuca inermis is at its best if interplanted with medium-sized grasses.
