Olea capensis is a shrub with leathery, glossy leaves and compact heads of small, white, sweetly scented flowers start flowering when still young, making it an ideal container plant. The round, fleshy, purple fruit are edible and attract birds.

Olea capensis also makes a lovely specimen tree with ash grey bark and a lovely weeping shape when young. There are several subspecies.
