Groundcover
In the natural habitat of Chlorophytum modestum you will always find it in the shade of forest trees. It makes an excellent groundcover.
Crabbea aucalis, a dwarf, stemless perennial has a basal rosette and flowers virtually on ground level. A very unusual plant suitable for a rockery.
Delosperma caespitosum is a succulent, compact shrublet that has creeping stems, producing slender flowering branches from the base. The pink flowers are more than 2cm in diameter.
Delosperma purpureum is very hardy and well adapted to harsh conditions. It forms a lovely groundcover in semi shade.
Falkia oblonga is a dwarf, mat-forming perennial that hardly exceeds 60mm in height. The flowers are quite large and it can form large patches in the wild.
Hermannia auricoma has nodding, yellow flowers can reach a height of 10cm. The leaves of this perennial are prostrate and quite often maroon in colour.
Hermannia depressa is a dwarf herb with spreading stems and leaves that are flat on the ground. The nodding flowers are borne on fairly short stalks. Flower colour is very variable. It sprouts annually from a woody rootstock.
Platycarpha glomerata gives the impression of a thistle due to its spiny rosette of leaves. However, it flowers in the crown of the rosette. It does best in a damp spot.
Portulacaria afra “prostrata” is a fairly hardy, pretty, succulent groundcover is a variety of Portulacaria afra. They look great cascading down a rockery.Plant it in well-drained soil.
Senecio reptans, a neat, little plant is the ideal groundcover for a wet spot that must be stabilised. It seeds freely.
