Xerophyta viscosa is a perennial that can reach heights up to 0.6m. It has blackened stems and the leaves are short, about 180mm long, with stiff hairs. The flowers borne during summer between November and April are mauve in colour and about 80mm in diameter, borne on stems about 400mm in length.
Xerophyta viscosa is a hardy garden plant ideal for a mixed border and is a lovely feature in a rockery or next to a pond. The flowers create a lovely display all through summer attracting pollinating insects to the garden. Keep dry during the dormant season.
Xerophyta viscosa is one of the so-called "resurrection plants" and only four are known in South Africa. During the dormant period the leaves becomes dry and brittle, but the moment it is watered they are green within days.
