Frequently Asked Questions
What Does The Challenge Category Mean?
It is important to pick the correct category to enter in. This will prevent us from sending you irrelevant tips and ideas. The same goes for where your garden is situated – City, Suburb and Province.
High-rise Gardens: Flats with windowsill and balcony gardens.
Townhouse Gardens: Small gardens in townhouse complexes.
Standard Urban Housing: Gardens in residential neighbourhoods.
Eco Estate Housing: Gardens in eco estates.
Smallholdings and Farms: Gardens situated on plots or farms.
What’s The Goal of the Challenge?
The goal is simply to increase the biodiversity in your garden by increasing the number of indigenous plants in your garden. You’ll learn how to calculate your Indigenous Score and your goal will then be to improve your own Indigenous Score.
Why Participate?
Participating in the challenge will help you convert your garden into one that is:
A haven for both humans and wildlife – allowing you and your loved ones to enjoy and appreciate nature in your own garden.
Visually exciting – contrary to popular belief, indigenous gardens can be stunningly beautiful.
Low in maintenance – allowing you to relax more in your garden than working in it.
Water wise – you’ll save lots of water which is one of our scarcest (and expensive) natural resources.
Resilient – you won’t have to worry that much about the occasional drought, flood or temperature extremes.
Are There Any Prizes?
The most important prize you’ll get is knowing that you are taking pro-active steps towards a beautiful indigenous garden that is water wise, low in maintenance and a haven for both humans and wildlife.
You’ll also be eligible to win product hampers and massive discount vouchers in the challenge lucky draws.
Who Can Participate?
Anyone with a garden, even if the garden is just a few pots on a windowsill or balcony. That includes people who want to plant more indigenous because it gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling, as well as those doing it for more pragmatic reasons.
What’s The Challenge Rules?
We don’t have rules. But when you accept the challenge you also accept our simple guidelines:
There are no starting and finishing dates. You are here to improve your own garden on your own schedule.
You are encouraged to calculate your own indigenous score. And set your own 3 month improvement target. We’ll show you how to do this.
You are encouraged to share before and after photos with other participants in the Makeover Group. Especially of the creatures and wildlife enjoying your garden.
Please do not share the Facebook group and challenge resources with non-participants. Rather encourage others to visit this page and participate in the challenge themselves.
