Plant Description

Andrachne ovalis is an evergreen, rounded bush/shrub with a soft, slightly weeping appearance with many branches. The flowers are often described as insignificant but the fruits are attractive. They are three lobed capsules that hang on long stalks, green at first but then turn yellow when matured before splitting to release the seeds.

Andrachne ovalis is one of the few shrubs that enjoy growing in the shade. It makes for a good filler in an unpopular shady spot and acts well as an eye-level screen beneath tall trees. It also does well in full sun in damp temperate climates. It has a moderate growth rate of about 400mm/year, it does not tolerate drought but can tolerate moderate frost.
