Aponogeton distachyos is a tuberous, aquatic herb with floating and submerged leaves. the floating leaves can be up to 20 cm long and 5cm wide.
The inflorescence is made up of two spikes; up to 4.5 cm long and the white flowers highly scented.
Growth is very gregarious in shallow pools or slowly flowing streams.
The plant is widely cultivated in South Africa, either as an ornamental plant or for its inflorescences which are used in the traditional Cape dish called .waterblommetjiebredie.
Although it multplies quickly, it is easy to control.
