Plant Description

Cenchrus ciliaris is a tufted perennial grass with a bristly false spike that is straw- or purple-coloured. All bristles are joined at the base below spikelet cluster. It occurs in the more arid parts of southern Africa.

Cenchrus ciliaris grows in dry, warm parts. It grows in all types of soil, but mostly in sandy soil and other well-drained soil types.
