Ochna pretoriensis is a much-branched evergreen shrub. The main stem is pale grey to white and sometimes longitudinal flaking occurs in papery strips.Flowers appear before the leaves, is yellowish, buttercup-like, releasing a strong fragrance.

The small size of Ochna pretoriensis makes it ideal for the smaller garden. It occurs in the northern provinces of South Africa and is very common around Pretoria.
