Prunus africana is a handsome evergreen tree with a spreading crown. The leaves, when crushed, have a faint smell of almonds. It is a moderately fast-growing tree which is sensitive to heavy frost, preferring areas where there is regular rain; it will tolerate moderate frost.

Prunus africana is very rare outside protected areas due to over-harvesting of the bark for medicinal purposes.
