Scadoxus puniceus is one of South Africa’s most striking bulbous plants. It grows naturally in shady areas in savannah. This species is quite variable and a number of different forms occur throughout its distribution range.
It is summer growing, briefly deciduous with highly attractive foliage. The spectacular bright red umbels, resembling a brush, is long lasting. It is followed by red berries that is relished by birds.
It is best planted in semi-shade, either on a rockery or amongst grasses or other perennials. Be careful not to overwater.
