We were requested to construct a vertical garden at a private residence in Atholl as part of an extensive renovation . In the centre of the main bedroom is an atrium and the request was to construct a vertical garden 4m x 2m, using indigenous plants. Since the atrium has no roof, part of the vertical garden receives sun and other parts full shade.
The system that we decided on is distributed by Lemon, who specialises in interior decorating. It is a robust, modular design that is relatively easy to install and that appealed to us.
It was decided to start growing the plants at the nursery so that by the time we could install, the plants would already have established. A temporary vertical garden was constructed at the nursery to hold to plants and to test the design.
At the clients property, the wall where the vertical garden was to be installed was properly sealed and as a precautionary measure, the wall was also covered with a 200 micron plastic. The strips to which the plant containers will be attached was then installed
This was the effect after all the containers were attached.
The site was visited again after three weeks to monitor the progress. A close-up shows good coverage.
Lessons Learned
- Every vertical garden is unique
- Almost impossible to provide a generic list of plants.
- Indigenous looks stunning!
